Role

Structural Concrete Repair

Location

St. James Barton, Bristol

The Brief

This project involved urgent concrete repair to a structural column supporting St. Peter’s Hospice in central Bristol. Due to the location and public foot traffic, we were required to isolate the area, ensure safe access, and carry out thorough investigation and remedial works without compromising the surrounding structure or public safety. The challenge centred around safely exposing and repairing a severely compromised load-bearing column.

Our Approach

Heavy-duty propping was installed to stabilise the structure before work began. The concrete was broken out to reveal an I-beam encased in concrete, which showed significant corrosion to the reinforcement. After carrying out Schmidt hammer testing and pressure washing, our team treated the steel with a rust-inhibiting primer. We then reinstated the concrete using high-strength repair mortar, followed by the application of corrosion inhibitors and anti-carbonation protective coatings to ensure lasting durability and structural protection.

The Results

Structural Protection

Load-bearing support restored using tested, high-strength repair methods.

Public Safety

Work safely contained with barriers and extraction units to protect the public.

Technical Precision

Schmidt hammer testing and detailed inspection guided targeted repairs.

Long-Term Durability

Protective coatings provide ongoing resistance to corrosion and carbonation.
